Just got back from February half term staying for a week at Tantalus Lodge in Whistler. Perfect family condo with two separate bedrooms, two bathrooms, huge lounge and well equipped kitchen.
Heating was brilliant, easy to change room to room so that we could dry ski wear overnight in lounge, whilst keeping bedrooms cool enough to sleep in. There is an open fire, with suitable burning material available from reception (type of reclaimed wooden logs), but the heating was so good we never used it.
Fridge was a bit noisy at night, but quietened down when we filled it up and it could stay at temperature easier.
We stayed in room 304, which was near the end of the long corridor on the third floor (ground floor being the first floor). There was a floor above us, but it was never noisy during the night.
The swimming pool and two spa’s are brilliant, very warm and we swam nearly every day after skiing. There are towels available at reception, we tended to go down in swimwear wearing flip flops (thongs for the ozzies), and carrying our clothes to change into afterwards. There was snow around the pool but the water is very warm and steaming.
Although the lift is very close, a 5 minute walk maximum, there is a shuttle minibus that takes you half way there every couple of minutes; this is owned and run by the lodge and at quiet times, when not waiting for skiers, you could get a lift anywhere in the village. I took it on our last day to the museum. Although it is such a short walk, you do need to go up and down a small hill and whilst carrying ski’s and wearing boots, well, we used it every day !
There is no restaurant at all, but in the lobby there are vending machines for drinks, crisps, chocolates, coffee, etc. And there is an ice machine.
When we stayed, the hotel did a promotional $100 voucher for the supermarket in town. We used this and our shopping came to $75, so the other $25 was still on credit on the card, this we used later in the week.
With $2 to the UK £, we did finding eating out was cheap, so rarely cooked in, but did make breakfast every day. Pancakes, bacon and maple syrup !!!
The hotel claims only 3*’s, but we found it excellent value for money, everything was clean and the rooms were cleaned daily by great and friendly staff. There was a sign saying the staff did not wash up for you, but the first day we came back and found the dirty washing we had left to soak (from making bacon) had been put into the dishwasher and turned on for us. We did not even realise there was a dishwasher !!!
Large flat screen TV in lounge, lots of channels but would not play movies on a USB stick (only audio and picture viewing via USB). Free wifi in rooms.
We would stay here again, summer or winter. It is not a 5* hotel, but has everything you need and is perfect for a family. Our kids are 13 and 15 years old.
